Last Year's Tree

There's a picture of you that i took next to last year's tree
You're hanging up tinsel and turning your face to smile at me
I know just where it's kept, tucked inside of a book
I know where to find it but I can't stand to look
At the photo i took of you standing next to last year's tree
We kept it through new year's, and then for 3 weeks more
til all of the needles were brown and shedding all over the floor
when I'm cleaning the carpet I still find a few
They remind me of Christmas and last year and you
Like the photo i took of you standing next to last year's tree
It's the biggest that we've ever gotten by far
We said as we tied it to the roof of the car
Merry christmas to you, wherever you are
Put the lights on the tree, hang the sweet decorations around your home
Hug the people you love, we never know what tomorrow holds
Just like last year's tree, Christmas joy just can't last
And memories fade, nearly almost as fast
as the photo i took of you standing next to last year's tree

Santa Suit

She was just 17
you know what i mean
it was just a temporary gig for me
at the local department store
for 4 weeks and nothing more
but it all changed when she sat upon my knee
She didn't fit the typical mold
She seemed a bit too old
But I asked her what she wanted under her tree
Things got a little weird
When she tugged on my fake beard
And said all she wanted for Christmas was me
She came back to my place
But a shadow crossed her face
When I changed from my costume and gave her quite a start
I poured some eggnog and proposed a toast
But she looked at my civilian clothes
and said "I miss the jolly old man that stole my heart"
Now I'm putting on the Santa suit
I'm putting on the Santa suit
I'm putting on the Santa suit again
(Red suit white beard belt that's big and black
Red hat black boots carrying a sack)
Every time I swear I'm through
But then she bats those baby blues
And I know I'm putting on the Santa suit again
Now it's 20 years down the road
Our kids are both so old
They don't believe in Santa Claus at all
But when they've gone off to their beds
The same idea pops into our heads
And we heed the Christmas clarion call
Now I'm putting on the Santa suit
I'm putting on the Santa suit
I'm putting on the Santa suit again
(Red suit white beard belt that's big and black
Red hat black boots carrying a sack)
Every night the whole year through
We do the jolly thing we do
And I know I'm putting on the Santa suit again
